A design fits a rectangular embroidery field only when both scaled dimensions fit. A 100 × 150 mm design at 120% becomes 120 × 180 mm. It does not fit a 130 × 170 mm field in that orientation, even though its width fits. Those are arithmetic example dimensions, not a specification for a named machine.

Larger than these hoopsThe design needs more than a 6 x 10 inch field in the checked orientation. Check your machine manual for its largest supported field, or reduce the scale.

Enter the design’s stitched bounding dimensions from its file information and the supported embroidery field from your exact machine and hoop documentation. This tool does not open, inspect or modify embroidery files.

Use the field, not the outside hoop size

Brother’s larger-frame guidance describes multi-position hoops for its listed 4 × 4-inch machines: more fabric can be held, but the single-design embroidery area remains 4 × 4 inches. A large physical frame therefore does not establish a larger single-design field. That guidance applies to the models listed in the source, not every Brother machine.

For a different example, Brother labels the SA448 with a 6 × 6-inch embroidery field and an explicit list of compatible machines. Confirm both field size and machine support. Do not enter the outer plastic dimensions or assume a hoop with a similar shape is compatible.

If your manual gives inches, multiply by 25.4 to enter millimeters. NIST defines that conversion exactly . If the manual also gives an exact millimeter field, use that stated field rather than a rounded marketing size in inches.

How scale, margins and rotation work

scaled dimension = original dimension × scale percentage / 100

required field width = scaled width + 2 × margin

The same margin is added to the top, bottom, left and right. A 100 × 150 mm design at 100% with 5 mm on each edge needs a 110 × 160 mm rectangle. A zero margin checks only the entered bounds and adds no placement allowance.

The maximum geometric scale is the smaller of the width and height ratios after subtracting both edge margins. For the opening example, with no margin and no rotation, height limits the scale to about 113.3333%. This is a mathematical ceiling, not a recommended resize setting. Rounded output at a boundary does not replace the machine’s final fit check.

Rotation starts off. Enable 90° rotation only when the machine, design and intended placement allow it. The calculator then checks the swapped width and height too. It does not try arbitrary angles, split a design between hoopings or account for nonrectangular fields.

A geometric fit does not verify stitch quality

Brother’s density-preserving resize instructions , specifically for the XV8500D and XV8550D listed there, describe stitch-density recalculation with exceptions and limits. They also call for trial embroidery on the intended fabric and thread. That feature cannot be assumed for other models or software.

Check your own software’s permitted resize range and whether it recalculates stitches. A rectangle can fit while the stitch file, lettering or density still needs attention. Use the design-file guide for that separate decision. The hoop-size guide covers working space and fabric handling.

Method and sources

This is a rectangular geometry check, reviewed October 15, 2026. No machine or sewout was tested. All fit results depend on your entered bounds and manual field; the machine’s own preview and exact instructions remain necessary.

Hoop sizes in the hoop finder come from Brother: SA443 4 x 4 in. , SA444 5 x 7 in. , SA448 6 x 6 in. and SA441 6 x 10 in. . Hoops are listed per machine, so check compatibility before you buy.
